Labrador Retrievers - The United States' Most Popular Dog Breed
Annapolis, Maryland, resident Tom Cole enjoys the company of dogs, and holds a particular fondness for Labrador retrievers. When not busy with his work at Annapolis-based BBPC, Tom Cole enjoys spending time with his own Labrador.
First recognized as a unique breed in 1917, Labrador retrievers make great companions for those interested in high-energy, medium-sized dogs. The breed also possesses great intelligence and plays well with others, making it the most popular dog breed in the United States, according to the American Kennel Club. This same intelligence, coupled with its strong trainability, has also seen the Labrador retriever play the role of hunter, guide dog, or narcotics detector. Labrador retrievers commonly come in three colors: chocolate, black, or yellow. Red and silver variations are rare but can occur.
Labradors are typically bred with an eye toward structure and soundness. Many of the traits that mark the Labrador retriever, such as its weather-resistant coat, narrow chest, and ability to move effortlessly, reflect its heritage as a gun dog. These traits also can make it a great choice for a family with any kind of active lifestyle.
